The Music Therapy Toolbox: Autism explores basic music therapy principles, techniques, and strategies that have proven effective in making connections with individuals diagnosed on the spectrum of autism and in helping maximize their potential and enhance their quality of life. By addressing issues related to communication, restrictive behaviors, and social interaction, this professional self-study course provides guidelines for music therapists to develop effective strategies that help individuals with autism move along a continuum from isolation to interaction. The course includes an audio discussion and a workbook with these topics:

  • Social Interaction + Proximity to others + Participation in group activities + Personal interaction with others
  • Communication + Strategies to encourage receptive and expressive communication + Strategies for more appropriately expressing frustration, anger, and agitation
  • Restrictive Behaviors + Predictable routines and schedules + Increasing tolerance for transition and change + Functional daily living skills + Encouraging more independence

Optional CMTE credits. Music therapists can receive 10 hours of pre-approved CMTE credit by submitting written assignments detailed at the end of the course.
